Brazilian Symposium on Computer Games and Digital Entertainment
-
Preface
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I would like to extend a cordial welcome to all participants, guests and exhibitors of the XI Edition of the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Games and Digital Entertainment, the SBGames 2012.
SBGames is the annual symposium of the Special Interest Group on Games and Digital Entertainment of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) and is the most important event on game research and development in Latin America. It is co-promoted by SBC and ABRAGAMES (Brazilian Game Development Companies Association). The Symposium brings together students, researchers, artists, designers and other professionals, from several universities, research centers, design studios and game companies.
This year SBGames takes place in Brasília, Brazil’s capital, from November 2nd to 4th. Brasília was built between 1956 and 1960 and inaugurated, as the new Brazilian Capital, in April 21st, 1960. Its master plan ("Plano Piloto") was planned by Lucio Costa, and its major buildings were designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Known internationally by its modern architecture and urban design in the shape of an airplane (or a bird, as Lucio Costa conceived it), Brasilia has been declared a World Heritage by UNESCO. The city and its district are located in the Central-West region of the country, along a plateau known as Planalto Central.
SBGames 2012 comprises four main tracks (Computing, Art and Design, Culture and Industry), tutorial sessions, poster exhibitions, keynotes presentations, an indie game festival, and an art exhibition. Also, other satellite events such as Games for Change, Simulation Workshop and IGDA (Intl. Game Development Association) gathering will be held during this year’s event.
The SBGames 2012 exhibit provides a place for corporate sponsors, startup companies, academia and government representatives to interact with the public, showing their products and activities. The exhibit program includes shows, contests, competitions, demonstrations and the opportunity to play several games.
We would like to thank all participants and invited speakers. Special thanks are also due to our main sponsors, Banco do Brasil, SEBRAE, Atrativa e Wooga. We are grateful to the Brazilian Government and the research agencies CNPq, CAPES and FAP-DF for their continuous funding, to SBC and ABRAGAMES for their sponsorship, and to University of Brasília (UnB) for the local arrangements support.
We hope you will enjoy the exciting program of SBGames 2012 and take full advantage by actively participating in the event, contributing to the success of the SBGames 2012.
We wish you have a great time in Brasília!
